david fortune
IWC: Hello and welcome to this special edition of Interrogation. Special because today we don’t have a wrestler, a manager or an owner on the show. Ladies and Gentlemen allow me to introduce…David Fortune
David: Cue a whole viewership saying who?
IWC: Indeed, probably until about two weeks ago you’d never heard of David, however you will have now. David would you like to explain?
David: Sure, I’m the guy that’s been on Twitter of late under the handle of @triadrumours
IWC: Cue a whole viewership saying Oohhhh that guy
David: Yeah, that guy
IWC: David, over the past couple of weeks, you have shown to be quite knowledgeable about the inners workings of the industry. And yet, as we stated earlier…and we mean this with no disrespect, no one has ever heard of you. How long have you been in the business?
David: Now you’re asking…I’m reckoning it’s got to be twenty years plus
IWC: Would you like to tell everyone how you got into the sport?
David: Sure. I started out as a journalist for a local paper in New York which as part of it covered the independent wrestling scene in the City. I got a job in that section, and started spending most of my time in and around the different companies. In about…oh I don’t know what year it was, I accepted a job backstage at one of them, working my way up until I was advertising or something similar. I then saw an advertisement in one of the wrestling magazines for a job at the United Livewire Wrestling brand that was just starting to come to prominence, and it all went from there
IWC: And you were in the ULW up to the day it closed?
David: Yes that’s right, and I was taken on by the Independent Wrestling Cartel that bought out all the contracts when Sheryl Gray sold up…up until about five years ago when that closed as well
IWC: With the ULW and IWC closed what did you do then?
David: I actually took some time away from the business and just became a fan like everyone else
IWC: Did you never fancy working for the SCW?
David: It was a possibility, but after the amount of time I’d been at it, I thought I didn’t some time out, a break. I took six months or so, did a bit with MCW and other smaller companies, then in about 2013 I thought I’d retired
IWC: OK, so fast forward a few years, and the IWC reopen to a great deal of hype. Did you go straight back?
David: Just like many of the guys, I got a call from Orlando, and I was unsure what to do. I mean, I’d gotten used to sitting back on my boat and doing nothing all day. But there is something about this business that pulls you in, so I took Orlando’s offer, and worked backstage until about two months ago. I know they are based solely in New York now, but the tours and the fan fests take it out of you, and I not the young man I once was. I’ll be sixty five in a few days, and I thought I had better slow down
IWC: And so what made you get on Twitter?
David: There is an awful lot about the business that the fans never get to find out. I think with the advent of social media, the talent and the fans have never been closer. I’ve made a lot of friends in the business, and many of them still work for the companies which form what I called the Triad, so if I get to know something that could be happening, I think it’s only right I share it with the fans
IWC: And it’s been going well?
David: Yeah, both wrestlers and fans alike seem to have taken to it. I’ve even had the talent contacting me on there to post stuff that they might be doing. So yeah, it’s going well.
IWC: Is there ever a time when you think, hold on a minute, I’d best not put this?
David: Honestly no, of course sometimes it is subjective, but taking Jason King as the example, I did think long and hard about putting that out there because at the end of the day this is a person’s tragedy that they have to deal with. But, there are a lot of fans out there that love Jason, and would want to pass on their sympathies…but yes, it’s a balancing act
IWC: So these ‘sources’ that you talk of, are they always genuine?
David: I think that is part of my job, weedling out that which I know is point blank bullshit and that which could be true. Some of my sources are people in full view of everyone, others sit in the back like I used to. I don’t always get it right, but I like to think that I am mostly on the money
IWC: What’s the best rumor you ever posted?
David: Best?
IWC: The one that come out of leftfield that no one saw coming
David: I don’t know, I mean I’m sure everyone thought David Helms would go on for as long as he stated…that was a little unexpected I’m sure
IWC: And where did that come from?
David: All wrestlers have their hangers on…some of them are too trusting
IWC: So you’re saying that some of your information comes from friends of the wrestlers?
David: I’d say a majority comes from exactly there. It’s an ego driven sport, I don’t think anyone would disagree that fact. And most in the industry would sell their mother for the right price. Sometimes a rumor will be so ridiculous I bin it off, others times I post it anyway, just to see if anything sticks. Sometimes you get a bite…other times you don’t. Take the pregnancy rumor for starters…when I posted it I didn’t think for one second that one of the Triad’s World Champions would be pregnant. But seeing the way Taylor is acting is it that unbelievable?
IWC: Can you tell us a rumor that you point blank refused to post?
David: Hmmm, no names, but a few days ago I heard that one of the top girls in the business was sleeping with one of the higher authorities in the Triad. It would cause a shit storm if I said the names, so, that one will stay under wraps.
IWC: Viewer question here for you David, from Tommy in Glasgow Scotland. He asks, if you could see ANY match involving wrestlers in the Triad, what would it be?
David: Thank you for your question Tommy. I think it would have to be Taylor Chase-Cruze versus Syren, just for the hype it would bring. Both of them have excelled in their brands, and I think a match between the two would be for the ages
IWC: Who do you think would win?
David: Christ…sitting on the fence here…way too close to call
IWC: OK, moving on, during your time in the business you must have seen some very talented guys and girls?
David: Yeah, I personally think that the Triad has some of the best talent in the world, and it’s testament that some really amazing wrestlers couldn’t make it.
IWC: So off the top of your head, who would you put at the top of the pile?
David: From just the Triad?
IWC: Yes
David: Wow, twenty odd years there have been a fair few.
IWC: Just name a couple?
David: I think if you wanted to talk about a total package, Desolation would be right up there. He was amazing on the mic, and he backed up those words in the ring, and it’s testament that the likes of Hellkat and even now Kalinda over in ULW have seen success. AWOL and Johnny Kingdom at the time were real big money draws for the ULW and IWC. From a purely wrestling standpoint, I have to admit to being a mark for Xander Valentine when he was in his pomp. More recently, it’s difficult to ignore what Taylor Chase-Cruze has done, as well as Syren in SCW; both would probably top many people’s lists. I could go on, but those are the people who immediately come to mind
IWC: You only really report on the three companies you call the Triad, the IWC, the main brand and the NxtGen, the SCW and the ULW. Why do you think that those three were so popular? I mean, we’ve seen many companies try to make a comeback and fail miserably, yet the IWC and ULW made their return almost effortlessly.
David: I don’t think it’s to do with any singular reason, but I think the close links between the three have helped them immensely. I mean, just recently we have seen Shilo Valiant on IWC programming, many of the SCW roster appeared at some point in their careers in the IWC and SCW brands. New Eden and Silas World are all over the place…and I think it is this reason, and the competition between the three that allows them to survive. SCW and ULW/IWC back in the dead was THE biggest rivalry in wrestling, and I think that still exists, and makes all three companies strive to be better
IWC: Who would you say IS better?
David: Oooo, not going to answer that one. I will say however that all three bring different things to the table. It’s the fans that benefit from this.
IWC: Viewer question time, Paul from Atlanta asks who your favorite wrestler is ever?
David: Another good question Paul, and so many to choose from. Favorite doesn’t necessarily mean most talented, and although this guy wasn’t what you would call the very best wrestler, he always entertained, and for me he always gave one hundred percent. So yeah, if I was going to name my favorite I’d go Shawn Winters
IWC: Favorite from the ULW/IWC?
David: Again, perhaps not the best wrestler in the world, but always knew how to entertain…Porno Lad.
IWC: Over the past year or so we have seen the advent of the Sinistry and in turn New Eden, coupled with Silas World and the many other ‘stables’ that seem to have sprung up. What’s your take on it?
David: Well, for starters I don’t subscribe to this fallacy that you have to be in a stable to be the world champion. I know ‘technically’ Taylor Cruze is contracted to Silas World, but she won the title off her own back…Syren did exactly the same. But there is no doubt that they have changed the industry…but is it any worse…I don’t think so
IWC: But surely you don’t agree with the things they do?
David: Agree…no. But there is no doubt that Aiken Frost and Silas Mason are possibly two of the most intelligent men in wrestling today. Orlando, Olek and Raymond Der Vaart have really had their hands full, and I think that is testament to Frost and Mason manipulating the owners.
IWC: We heard from Silas saying he is trying to buy the IWC, do you think he could ever succeed
David: One thing I have learned with the IWC is that you never say never…anything can happen, and it certainly wouldn’t surprise me. But it’s looking more and more likely to be Sebastian Blake…but I hope he knows what he is getting himself into because I think Aiken and Silas are only just getting started…and I’m hearing rumblings of a third such group that could change the dynamics still further
IWC: In a good way or bad?
David: That depends on your perspective
IWC: The final viewer question comes from Helen in Texas.
David: Thank you for taking the time Helen
IWC: She asks what in wrestling last year made you smile the most?
David: That’s different…made me smile…Oh yes, I think other than pure comedic moments that were meant to make us smile, I would say Gavin Taylor winning the Evolution title. When you have been around as long as I have, it’s always nice to see someone who has worked his ass off for this sport finally claim a top title. I know people thought he was a joke, but he was so impressive beating Kordy…and yeah, seeing him hold that title aloft made me smile. By the way…keep a look out for Kordy in SCW, I think she is going to be huge over there.
IWC: Usually at this point we fire names at our guests and ask them to sum them up with the first thing that comes into their heads
David: Not been looking forwards to this
IWC: Well, you’re in luck. We thought what with how long you have been in the business; we would ask you if wrestlers from the past faced the current stars, who would win?
David: OK, sounds fun
IWC: OK, firstly, Desolation versus Thirteen?
David: Thirteen is a talented guy, but honestly I can’t think of many people that I would choose over Desolation
IWC: Robin Brooks versus Kelcey Wallace
David: On her day Robin could go no doubt about that, but for me Kelcey takes this as I don’t believe there is anyone who is as resilient as she is.
IWC: Johnny Kingdom versus William Mason
David: This is probably the closest matched so far. It would probably depend on whose head was most in the game as both could be distracted. I’d probably sway towards Johnny Kingdom…just
IWC: Andre Jordan versus Nathan Creed
David: I’d actually love to see this match…two technicians of the game. I think Andre Jordan would just have enough.
IWC: And finally, Aiken Frost versus Shinzan Valfane
David: Do you really remember Valfane? He didn’t wrestle unless it involved blood. It would be brutal, it would be horrific, but Aiken Frost I think is one of the most manipulative men of our time. I think he’d find a way, even against someone as hardcore as Valfane. And of course New Eden would have something to do with it as well. Some good matches there…makes you realize how lucky we are to be in the Triad
IWC: OK, we are getting towards the end of the interview now. Do you think there has ever been someone who you thought would make it, but didn’t quite get over the line?
David: There have been a lot of people I thought would be world champion but didn’t quite achieve the honor. Jackson Adams is one I can think of, though he got close lots of times. I sometimes think Psycho was better than he ever showed, he was just too intent on hurting someone than winning matches.
IWC: And of the current IWC crop, is there anyone you would like to see break through the ceiling?
David: It’s difficult out there now, there is so much top talent…but I can’t understand why a team like the Blacklist is not tag team champions because they should be. Scott Cannon, yes he is a tag champion, but he’s a singles wrestler, and a good one, and should be competing for the top singles titles. Chris Davids is much better than he is showing at the moment, Vanilla Skyy, Abigail Lindsay…the list goes on and on, people that should be holding titles but for whatever reason aren’t. Like I said, it’s hard, but the companies involved are not utilizing them the way they should because they are all main event caliber, perhaps even higher given the chance. They took a chance on Tina Valentine and I doubt anyone would disagree that she surely in line for a world title shot
IWC: And in SCW?
David: The obvious one would be Kennedy Street who surely must get a World title shot soon. Other than her, Autumn Valentine may have held the woman’s title for a while, but I think she is so much better. Matt Auclair was dominant for so long, but I don’t think his face fits with the management over there. Merrick Wiseman could be amazing if given more of a chance...what is this ‘enforcer’ crap Olek is pulling on him…let the guy do what he loved…wrestle
IWC: ULW?
David: It’s a little bit harder with them being a newer brand, but Cameron McNichol is the first person who comes to mind, and it’s criminal to be fair how little Raymond Der Vaart is using him. Other than Cameron, I’d say Abigail is getting the same raw deal in ULW, as she could be a world title contender.
IWC: Finally David, you touched on the fact how much potential there is in the Triad. If you had to name one person who you think will be the biggest stars in 2015 across the companies, who would you say?
David: Just one? OK, well in Cartel NxtGen I would have to say Mogui wouldn’t I? Seriously, they could may be in NxtGen at the moment, but he could be a superstar in this business is Mr Wasley continues to develop him the way he has been. In SCW, I’d probably say Kordy OR Bolu as both are going to take SCW by storm…is that cheating?
IWC: We’ll let you off
David: In ULW she’s already claimed the World title over there which isn’t a bad start, so I’m going to go for Willow Wilkes, and in IWC…I just can’t look past Tina Valentine, she has the potential to be World Champion if she gets the chance. Sky’s the limit for that young lady if she stops believing the hype and just gets on with it
IWC: Well David, I have to say it’s been an absolute pleasure
David: I’ve enjoyed it, thanks for having me
IWC: We look forward to hearing from you real soon, and keep them rumors coming
